Kwinana, Pinjarra & Wagerup
The Kwinana, Pinjarra and Wagerup refineries are located in Western Australia and operated by Alcoa World Alumina Australia. Alcoa's three refineries in WA have a combined capacity of 8.8 million tonnes per year - a significant source of the world's alumina.
Alcoa's Kwinana refinery has been in operation since 1963 and currently has a capacity of 2 million tonnes per year. While the Kwinana refinery produces mainly smelter grade alumina, it also produces a variety of specialty aluminas which have a wide range of industrial and manufacturing applications.
The Pinjarra refinery was commissioned in 1972 and has a capacity of 4.2 million tonnes per year. It is regarded as one of the most successful and cost efficient alumina refineries in the world and currently produces about seven per cent of the world's alumina, making it one of the world's biggest alumina refineries.
The Wagerup refinery was commissioned in 1984 with current capacity running at 2.6 million tonnes per year. It is the most environmentally advanced alumina refinery in the world with the application of advanced technology contributing to recent improvements in environmental management.
