Point Henry

Established in 1963, the Smelter was one of the first plants in Australia to produce primary aluminium for domestic and international markets.  Today it produces 190,000 tonnes of aluminium a year and is one of the world’s most efficient smelters.

Together, Alcoa’s aluminium smelters at Point Henry and Portland produce approximately 30 per cent of Australia’s total aluminium production. As a result, Alcoa is Victoria’s largest exporter with $1.6 billion in exports in 2007. Alcoa accounts for around 8 per cent of Victoria’s goods exports or 5 per cent of total exports.

Around half of the aluminium produced at the smelter is sold to the neighbouring Alcoa Australia Rolled Products plant, where aluminium is rolled into sheet. The remainder of Point Henry’s aluminium is cast into 300kg ingots and sold on to Alcoa customers.
